How to Set your Dating Profile for Success

Created on: 2024-06-24

Here are some recommendations for optimizing your success on dating sites, especially, of course, Unjibbed - the dating and community site for covid-vax-refuseniks - also why this site's designed as it is.

Images

The first thing anyone sees of you on a dating site is your photo. Many sites insist on having at least one clear face photo. Others don't insist on any image at all. The reality is, on the latter type of site, profiles with no image tend to get far less traction than those with. Also, those without a photo tend not to have much text with them.

The policy at Unjibbed is that everyone needs to have one image to search and be found - however, that image doesn't have to show your face. If you need or just want to remain anonymous, that's fine, but having some kind of image catches people's eyes, and your choice of image will show something of your personality. Some of the folks here have been quite creative in this respect.

One thing that we see on dating / community sites is photos that are sideways or upside down. This doesn't create a good impression, but if you're not sure how to correct that before uploading, don't worry, I've got you covered. At the bottom of the image cropper page, click on "Rotate / flip controls", and you'll see some new controls appear to rotate or even mirror-image your photo as needed.

Match-Maker Questions

Next, there are "multiple choice" type questions which are used for matching and searching. Again, there are two types of sites here. With one, you make selections to describe yourself, and you can see basically everyone else on the site, and filter using the search facility.

On the other type, you make selections to describe yourself and your ideal partner, and the system only shows you profiles where you mutually match.

One of the problems with the first type is that you get sites where the women get bombarded with many introductions from men who aren't good matches for them. Overwhelmed with too many messages, the women stop even opening their messages, so that even an intro from a good match goes unread - a lose-lose situation.

This is one of the reasons I designed Unjibbed along the must-match-to-see design. Also, especially for Unjibbed, where members may face discrimination in some quarters, privacy may be an additional concern.

However, Unjibbed offers something which is unique AFAIK: two sets of filters, one for friends, another for dating.

So, for example, a straight woman wants to meet men within five years of her own age for dating, but is happy to meet either sex, from a broader age-range, for friends. She can set up her profile to do just that. Friends-only matches will only see the friends part of her profile, whereas dating matches will see all of it. In this way she can be open and expressive to potential dates, but as discreet as she chooses to be among friends-only matches.

There are a lot more options for filtering than those just mentioned. However, with this type of match-maker, to get the best out of it, be careful about being overly restrictive in what you filter for.

I'm not suggesting for a moment that anyone lower their standards. But it's worth reflecting on what's a genuine deal-breaker versus a "fantasy" requirement. E.g. for me, my ideal fantasy partner would be Kate Winslet, obviously.

But in real life I'm more open.

More generally, you could hypothetically . . .
